Awakening Iya

“Iya, the camp-eater, has come in the guise of a babe . . . if he wakes now, he will swallow the whole tribe, with one hideous gulp! Come, we must flee with our people.”

Awakening Iya is a story about how Stanley who has spent his whole life without love, disengaged from society, and increasingly enmeshed in a fantasy world of film and computer game characters, can have developed a simplistic and rigid model of the value of a life. A frightening but harmless perspective, until he meets Mike, a man whose progressive loss of his wife to Alzheimer’s, is creating a space and confusion in his life.

Mike’s fundamental sociability unwittingly awakens the potential for Stanley to bring his perspective into the real world. As Mike’s powers of judgement decrease, Stanley’s influence grows, until Mike’s love is turned into a weapon.
