Beyond The Day Job is an album of songs written by John Sparrow in his late twenties and thirties whilst working full time as a university lecturer and psychologist.
These original recordings were made using a basic sound-on-sound approach
on an Akai quarter-inch reel-to-reel tape recorder.
Songs such as Dance On and You Are All Love Songs reveal his lifelong affinity with
old-style swing rhythms and melodies, whilst the songs Five Out Of Ten and
Summer’s In Town reveal an undercurrent in 1970’s and early 1980’s music for 1950’s gentler rock and roll forms.
The songs Feel I’ve Had Enough, Falling Under Your Spell and No Way Out utilise the beats of the disco era of 1973 to 1979.
There are piano/keyboard songs such as Lucky Sun, The Man Who and The Way I Love You, together with guitar-based tracks such as Baby I Love You, Certain Kind Of Woman, Every Footstep, Maybe I Like Your Legs and Take Me Home.
Unsurprisingly, all of the songs on this album are love songs.
